  • Trade is one of the most dynamically developing industries of Russian economy, which makes the research of the competitive state of the food retail market particularly relevant.
    On the basis of empirical study of Russian retail market we have come to the following conclusions:
    1. The choice of competitive strategy is determined by the market life cycle and the intensity of the competition in the segment.
    2. Big chain retailers represented in different market segments are faced with competition not only inside their format but also between formats.
    3. For each segment of retail market it is advisable to use various competitive strategies making a target niche as narrow as possible.
    The significance of the research consists in developing the applied aspects of the competitiveness of the food retail market in the Russian Federation.
